French Digital Media Minister Clara Chappaz has condemned the #SkinnyTok trend on TikTok, describing it as “disgusting and completely unacceptable.” According to her, the trend promotes anorexia, contributing to the spread of shame, humiliation, and psychological pressure, especially among young girls and women.
The minister has urged France’s audiovisual and digital communications regulator (Arcom) and the relevant European Union bodies to take appropriate measures.
“These videos, which promote extreme thinness, are disgusting and cannot be tolerated. Digital tools can promote progress and freedom, but their improper use threatens lives. Social platforms can no longer avoid their responsibility,” Chappaz said.
The number of posts on TikTok with the #SkinnyTok hashtag has now exceeded half a million.
