Scientists using the James Webb Space Telescope have made a significant discovery. They have obtained the most convincing evidence to date of the possible existence of life outside the solar system. They have detected chemical traces of gases in the atmosphere of an alien planet that are produced exclusively by biological processes on Earth, writes Reuters.
Two gases, dimethyl sulfide (DMS) and dimethyl disulfide (DMDS) were observed during Webb's observations of the exoplanet K2-18b. They are produced on Earth by living organisms, mainly microbial life, such as marine phytoplankton and algae.
The planet is located 124 light-years from Earth.
