Tesla's Reuters reported that plans to import components for its Cybercab and Semi electric trucks from China have been halted after President Donald Trump imposed tariffs on Chinese goods during a trade war.
The decision could delay Tesla's long-awaited mass production of the models, which CEO Elon Musk had pitched to investors as key innovations to boost the American automaker's growth.
According to sources, when Trump imposed a 34% tariff on Chinese goods, Tesla was prepared to pay the additional costs. But when tariffs rose above that threshold, the company could no longer sustain its import plans. Specifically, on April 9, the tariff was raised to 84% and later to 125%, bringing the total tariff on goods exported from China to the US to 145%.
