An all-female crew of six has launched from Texas. Blue Origin, owned by Amazon founder Jeff Bezos, is organizing the flight.
The crew members traveling to space on the New Shepard rocket include singer Katy Perry, J. Bezos' fiancée Lauren Sanchez, activist Amanda Nguyen, aerospace engineer and entrepreneur Aisha Bowe, film producer Kerrien Flynn, and CBS News radio host Gayle King.
"This is 1963." This is the first all-female crew since Valentina Tereshkova's flight," Blue Origin said.
The New Shepard rocket was launched from the Texas space station; the device is fully autonomous and will not require manual control. The flight lasted 11 minutes; the crew rose to an altitude of more than 100 km above the Earth, crossing the border of space.
