Reuters sources reported that American technology giant Apple has chartered cargo flights to transport 600 tons, or about 1.5 million iPhones, from India to the United States.
The company had increased production in India to avoid tariffs imposed by President Donald Trump.
In this way, Apple tried to bypass high tariffs and ensure a supply of iPhones in the US market. Experts have warned that the price of iPhones in the US could rise sharply as the company heavily depends on imports from China. For comparison, the tariff on imports from India is 26%, but it was suspended due to the 90-day break announced by Trump, which does not include China.
Apple has collaborated with the Chennai airport in India, speeding up customs procedures and reducing customs clearance time from 30 to 6 hours.
Since March, about six cargo planes, each with a capacity of 100 tons, have already left for the US, the latest of which departed the week the new tariffs went into effect.
According to estimates, the packaged weight of the iPhone 14 and charging cable is about 350 grams, meaning the 600 tons of cargo correspond to about 1.5 million devices.
The company and India’s aviation ministry have not yet commented on the news.
