Japan is working on a Mars lander

SpaceNews reports that the Japan Aerospace Exploration Agency (JAXA) is developing a concept that could allow the agency to send small rovers to the surface of Mars.

Masaki Fujimoto, the new executive director of the JAXA Space Exploration Agency's Institute for Space Science (ISAS), is considering using inflatable deceleration systems to land spacecraft on Mars.

ISAS plans to use protective airbags to propel rovers weighing 100-200 kg to the surface.
