Representatives of the NASA Center for Near-Earth Object Research reported that NASA highly estimates the probability of the asteroid 2024 YR4 colliding with the moon in 2032.
This figure is currently 3.8%; at the end of February, it was 1.7%. Moreover, the collision will not affect the orbit of the Earth's satellite. The probability that the asteroid will not hit the moon is 96.2%.
Also, with the help of the James Webb Space Telescope, scientists have clarified the asteroid's size range. Now, it is 53-67 meters, which is approximately the size of a 10-story building.
Recall that in early March, astronomer Leonid Elenin compared the power of the explosion of the asteroid 2024 YR4 with that of the Chelyabinsk meteorite explosion. According to him, if the meteorite hits Earth, it will be a "regional disaster."
