With the introduction of a new feature, ChatGPT usage has reached a record high

Reuters reported that a craze to create Ghibli-style images with the ChatGPT image-creation tool led to a record number of users for OpenAI’s chatbot last week, overwhelming its servers and temporarily limiting its use.

The online trend has seen users worldwide flood social media with hand-drawn images from the famous Japanese animation studio Studio Ghibli. The studio, founded by renowned director Hayao Miyazaki, is known for films such as “Ghost in the Shell” and “My Neighbor Totoro.”

The average weekly active users surpassed 150 million for the first time this year, according to market research firm Similarweb. “We’ve added a million users in the last hour,” OpenAI CEO Sam Altman said in a post on X.

According to SensorTower, the number of active users, app downloads, and revenue from in-app subscriptions reached an all-time high last week after the AI company rolled out updates to its GPT-4o model, enabling it to generate advanced imagery.
