More pickup trucks and sport utility vehicles were sold in the United States in the first quarter than in the same period last year. Reuters reported that this was before President Donald Trump imposed tariffs on imported cars, as the new policy could significantly increase tariffs.
General Motors topped the list, with sales up 17%. Meanwhile, sales of electric vehicles rose 19.2% in the first quarter, according to Wards Intelligence. Tesla is expected to report a decline amid weakening demand for its aging models and growing discontent with CEO Elon Musk’s policies.
The tariffs could also reduce the number of lower-priced imported cars, such as Ford’s compact Maverick pickup, on the market.
