American entrepreneur and head of the neurotechnology company Neuralink, Elon Musk, has confirmed that the BlindSight visual implant will be implanted in a person for the first time this year.
Musk published a message from journalist Sawyer Merritt on his page on the X social network, which states that the implant will be implanted in a patient for the first time in late 2025.
“Elon Musk’s company Neuralink plans to implant its new BlindSight brain chip into a patient for the first time in late 2025. This device is designed to restore vision to completely blind people,” the publication states.
Musk said that initially, the quality of vision would be low, but over time, “a version will be created that will exceed the natural visual capabilities of a person.”
According to the businessman, the BlindSight device will allow people who are blind from birth to see, as well as those who have lost both eyes and the optic nerve, provided that the visual cortex is not damaged.
