The Italian newspaper Il Foglio has released a pilot issue in which all the material, including articles, headlines, and even sarcastic comments, was created by a neural network. The Guardian reports that this example, called Il Foglio AI, is the first in the world to be generated entirely by artificial intelligence.
The newspaper's editor-in-chief, Claudio Serrasa, explained that the experiment aims to demonstrate the impact of artificial intelligence technologies on modern journalism. According to him, within the project's framework, journalists only asked questions to the AI and checked the answers, while the neural network independently generated articles that were free of gross grammatical errors.
The four-page issue is available in both print and online versions. It is devoid of personal opinions, in-depth analysis, and live interviews, which are characteristic of traditional journalism. The materials are presented in the form of simple and understandable articles without obvious grammatical errors, but they do not contain direct quotes from people.
The special issue features a front-page article on US President Donald Trump, describing the "paradox of Italian Trumpism" and how his followers oppose the "destruction of culture" but either disregard it or, worse, "rejoice" in it. The front-page column also features "Putin: 10 Betrayals," which recounts "20 years of broken promises, broken agreements, and broken oaths" by Russian President Vladimir Putin. The issue also includes an article on Italy's economic reforms, income tax changes, and salary increases for 750,000 workers.
It is important to note that none of the articles published in the newspaper's pages directly quote any individual.
