AI robots could help care for Japan's aging population

Artificial intelligence-powered robots could care for older people. They could change their diapers or move them to prevent bedsores.

A 150-kg robot called AIREC was on display in Tokyo. It is a prototype for a future “caregiver” in Japan, which is facing a growing shortage due to its rapidly aging population. “Given our aging society and declining birthrate, we will need help from robots in medicine, elderly care, and everyday life,” said Professor Shigeki Sugano.

Japan is “leading the world” in terms of its aging society. At the same time, the country’s birthrate and working-age population are declining.
