3 billion-year-old beach found on Mars

An international team of scientists has discovered an ancient beach on Mars, which allowed us to determine when water existed on the planet. The study was published in the journal PNAS.

American and Chinese specialists analyzed data obtained from the crust of the Mars rover "Zhurong." They discovered that in the northern hemisphere of Mars, there is a dried-up ocean and a beach, the age of which may be up to 3 billion years.

According to the study, there was water on Mars from 4.1 billion to 3.7 billion years ago.

The data from "Zhurong" show that water was preserved on Mars longer than previously thought. Scientists believe that water was preserved on Mars until the end of the Hesperian period, which means that conditions suitable for life exist.
