A consortium led by Elon Musk has announced that it has offered to buy the company that controls OpenAI for $97.4 billion. The move is Musk’s latest attempt to prevent the artificial intelligence startup from becoming a for-profit company.
Musk’s offer could exacerbate his long-standing feud with OpenAI CEO Sam Altman.
Altman immediately responded, “No thanks, but if you want, we can buy Twitter for $9.74 billion.”
Musk co-founded OpenAI with Altman in 2015 as a non-profit organization but left before the company rapidly expanded. In 2023, he founded xAI, a startup developing artificial intelligence.
