SpaceX to begin testing satellites with direct cellular communication

According to Nasaspaceflight, SpaceX is set to expand its Starlink system by launching beta tests of satellite-based direct cellular communications. This move will allow mobile phones to connect to cellular services almost anywhere.

SpaceX has formally requested special temporary authorization to conduct direct cellular communications tests on Starlink satellites starting January 27, 2025.

These tests will identify the need for further direct cellular communication technology development and will allow for more reliable coverage in areas where people may encounter emergencies. SpaceX will have until July 26, 2025, to test the new services, including all launch phases, orbit entry, and operation.

If the tests are successful and provide the expected data transfer speed and coverage quality, SpaceX plans to move from the beta version to a fully operational system.
