Volkswagen concern representative Daniela Cavallo announced that management plans to lay off tens of thousands of employees, close at least three factories in Germany, and reduce production at the rest.
Europe's biggest carmaker has talked with unions for weeks about its plans to restructure the business and cut costs. For the first time in decades, the company is considering closing factories in Germany.
Cavallo did not say which factories would be affected, and some of the nearly 300,000 Volkswagen Group employees in Germany could lose their jobs.
