The US government has issued the first fine in history to a satellite company that failed to clean up space junk after it left it spinning out of control in Earth's orbit.
The Federal Communications Commission has fined Dish Network $150,000 for failing to move satellite satellites to a safe distance from those in use.
Dish Network acknowledged its liability and agreed to a plan of action with the FCC.
Space debris is the debris of objects sent into near-Earth space, which remained in orbit after being used and resources exhausted. It is fraught with the risk of collision with other spacecraft. They are often old communication satellites or remnants of spaceships and rockets.
