Five members of the Armenian boxing team won bronze medals at the IBA World Boxing Championships in Dubai, UAE.
The Armenian representatives were Rudolf Garboyan (51 kg), Artur Bazeyan (60 kg), Hovhannes Bachkov (67 kilograms), Rafael Hovhannesyan (86 kg), and Davit Chaloyan (+92 kg).
Garboyan lost 0:5 to Uzbekistan's Hasanboy Dusmatov in the semifinals. Bazeyan lost 0:5 to another Uzbek, Abumalk Khalukov. Bachkov fought Russia's Yevgeny Kuler and lost 5:2. Olympic bronze medalist and four-time European champion Hovhannes Bachkov won the world championship bronze medal for the fifth time. In the 86 kg semifinal, Rafael Hovhannisyan faced Alexey Alfioraun of Belarus and lost. The last representative of Armenia, the 2021 world vice-champion David Chaloyan, lost to Arman Makhanov from Uzbekistan in the super heavyweight semifinal of the World Championships.
It should be noted that the Armenian senior national team has never won 5 medals at the world championships. The Armenian team consisted of 14 boxers. Baregham Harutyunyan (48 kg), David Yegoryan (54 kg), Zhirayr Sargsyan (57 kg), Narek Hovhannisyan (63.5 kg), Armen Mashakaryan, Ararat Harutyunyan (71 kilograms), Vakhtang Harutyunyan (75 kg), Artush Hovhannisyan (80 kg), and Narek Manasyan (92 kg) also competed at the World Championships.
The IBA World Boxing Championships were held from December 2-13. Armenia was represented in this year's main competition by international referee Bagrat Avoyan, who is included in the championship's refereeing team. The team's head coach is Rudik Mkrtchyan, and the assistant coach is Robert Petrosyan. The Armenian delegation also included the President of the Boxing Federation of Armenia, Hovhannes Hovsepyan, the first vice president, Samvel Gasparyan, as well as European champions Mekhak Ghazaryan and Samson Khachatryan.
428 boxers from 108 countries participated in the World Championships.
