The era of the "San Siro" is coming to an end: it will be demolished

The Milan City Council, after lengthy and heated discussions early this morning, approved the sale of San Siro to Inter and Milan for € 197 million. Both clubs had warned that they could leave the city if they did not receive ownership rights.

Under the new terms, they will become the owners not only of the legendary stadium but also of the 28 hectares of surrounding land. It is planned to build a modern 71,500-seat stadium here, designed by the architectural firms Foster and Partners and MANICA.

Inter and Milan will continue to play at San Siro until 2031, after which the historic structure will be demolished, making way for a park, offices, and entertainment complexes.

The decision has caused widespread discontent in the political arena; even some councilors allied with Mayor Giuseppe Sala have criticized the sale price and the lack of transparency surrounding the project. However, with this vote, the Italian Football Federation also got what it was waiting for: Milan retains its bid to host the Euro 2032 games.
