"Lakers" striker LeBron James surpassed the legendary Kareem Abdul-Jabbar in the number of points in his career and rose to first place in the history of the NBA.
With 10.9 seconds left in the third quarter of the game against "Oklahoma," James reached the career mark of 38,388 points.
Abdul-Jabbar's record has been held since April 5, 1984. The legendary basketball player finished his career in 1989 with 38,387 points. The six-time NBA champion was present at the meeting, where LeBron surpassed his achievement.
The match was interrupted by a symbolic ceremony during which Abdul-Jabbar passed the ball to LeBron.
"The record was preserved for almost 40 years. Many thought that no one would surpass it. LeBron, you are the best scorer in NBA history. Congratulations," said Adam Silver, head of the league.
Karl Malone (36,928), Kobe Bryant (33,643), and Michael Jordan (32,292) are also among the top five scorers in league history.
"Standing next to a great legend like Karim means a lot to me. It is a great happiness. Please give the captain a standing ovation," said LeBron James.
James needed to score 36 points to break the record. After reaching the historic mark, the leader of the "Lakers" scored only 2 points in the fourth quarter and finished the game with 38 points. "Lakers" lost to "Oklahoma" with a score of 130:133.
