The 31st World Student Winter Games ended in Lake Placid, USA, in which representatives of Armenia also participated.
Among the Armenian athletes, skier Mikayel Mikayelyan recorded the best result. He placed 4th in the 10km freestyle and 10km pursuit classic skiing events. In the 10 km freestyle competition, the leading skier of Armenia, in an ongoing fight with 82 participants from 26 countries, needed more time to win the bronze medal by 17 seconds. Mikael was also very close to becoming a medalist in the 10 km pursuit classic competition.
The representative of Armenia showed the 4th result, conceding only to the representatives of Japan, Norway, and the USA. Mikayel Mikayelyan also performed earlier in the qualifying round of the 1500-meter sprint, where he finished in 13th place, failing to make it to the finals.
The other representative of Armenia, mountain skier Harutyun Harutyunyan, took 37th place in 93 participants' giant downhill competition. In the downhill competition, he quite confidently completed the first attempt but failed in the second. At the 31st World Student Winter Games, the last representative of Armenia, snowboarder Norik Tadevosyan, showed a result of 39.37 seconds in the qualification stage of the parallel giant curl and reached the 1/16 finals, where, however, he lost to the American Hunter Bernard and was eliminated from the competition.
Overall, Norik Tadevosyan took 29th place in the competition of 33 participants. Tadevosyan also took part in parallel curling competitions and took 26th place. Earlier, among the representatives of Armenia, the single skater Marina Asoyan and the figure skating dance couple Victoria Azroyan-Arthur Gruzdev finished their performances. After the short program, Marina Asoyan took 30th place. She was eliminated from the group of 24 athletes participating in the free program, and the figure skating dance pair of Victoria Azroyan-Arthur Gruzdev took 13th place.
This year, for the first time, the RA delegation participated in the World Winter Universiade with state funding. The RA government allocated more than 19 million drams for this purpose. In 2017, their only medal of Armenia at the World Student Winter Games was won by skier Sergey Mikayelyan. In the 10 km freestyle skiing competition, he took 3rd place with 27.04 and was awarded a bronze medal.
