Maldives to build climate-resilient floating city

The Hydrometeorology and Monitoring Center SNCO reports:

“The world’s first large-scale floating city project, which is resilient to climate threats, is being implemented in the Maldives. This is a real response to the challenges posed by sea level rise. Due to rising global sea levels, the Maldives may be submerged by 2100.

The floating city is being built just 10 minutes from the capital, Male, in a 200-hectare lagoon. The project envisages the construction of thousands of residential units surrounded by canals, as well as schools, shops, hospitals, hotels, and public spaces - all on the water.

The main idea of the project is the synthesis of nature and technology. The city plan is inspired by the brain structure of coral, which served as the basis for the design of a network of streets and canals. Artificial reefs will be installed at the bottom of the floating platforms, stimulating the growth of live corals and attracting marine life. Thus, the city will become part of the aquatic ecosystem.

Housing will be partially prefabricated, reducing emissions and speeding up the construction process. All buildings are connected to a “smart grid” that manages energy distribution, prioritizing renewable sources. The Maldivian floating city meets international standards for “floating urbanism.”

The Maldives is rewriting its history. A country considered vulnerable to rising sea levels is becoming an innovator in the fight against climate change, showing the world that sustainability can be expressed in beauty, practicality, and a deep respect for nature.
