On the new Constitution

The Ministry of Justice of the Republic of Armenia reports:

An article was published on the news website of “OdaTV” claiming that a “historic decision” will be made and the “Armenian people” will withdraw from the Constitution.

Without separately addressing each point of the publication, we inform you that this publication regarding the New Constitution is entirely false and does not correspond to reality. The information presented completely distorts the possible amendments to the New Constitution.

Dear citizens, given that the process of developing the new Constitution is being carried out by the Ministry of Justice, we clarify all the details.

Currently, the Constitutional Reforms Council is operating, comprising representatives of the legislative, executive, and judicial authorities, extra-parliamentary forces, and public organizations. The Council is headed by the Minister of Justice Srbuhi Galyan. The Council works systematically and thoroughly, discussing the proposed amendments to each chapter of the Constitution. The goal is to ensure that each proposed amendment is substantiated, professional opinions are taken into account, as well as a broad perspective of public and political interests.

We inform you that the discussions, recommendations and adopted decisions of the Council do not yet constitute the text of the new Constitution. Everything depends on the final decision of the people, which will take place through a referendum. Any amendment to the Constitution will be made only if the referendum approves the issue of adopting a new Constitution.

This process reflects the observance of the democratic principles of the Republic of Armenia and emphasizes that the final word belongs only to the people.

The Ministry of Justice calls on the media and the public to rely on official information and refrain from unfounded assumptions, since the process of amending the new Constitution is open and in the field of view of everyone. It should be noted that the text of the new Constitution will be put to a referendum after the national elections.

The Ministry of Justice is conducting information on the sessions held by the Constitutional Reform Council and the topics discussed. Once again, we urge you to follow only the official messages published by the ministry."
