In 2025, 3,090 people, including 192 women and 437 children, died trying to reach Spain by sea. While this is a decrease from the previous year, rights groups say tighter border controls are pushing migrants onto more dangerous routes.
The deadliest route this year has been from North Africa to the Canary Islands, with around 1,900 deaths. The Algeria-Balearic Islands route is also becoming increasingly dangerous. The report stresses that the response to maritime tragedies remains inadequate and that rescue operations are often delayed.
