Australia has become the first country in the world to ban children under 16 from using social media.
A law came into force in the country today, requiring the world’s 10 largest platforms to remove accounts belonging to Australian teenagers and ban them from using new ones, The Guardian reports.
This applies to social networks such as Facebook, Instagram, Threads, X, YouTube, Snapchat, Reddit, Kick, Twitch, and TikTok. Those who fail to comply could face fines of up to $33 million.
The new law has already been criticized by big tech companies and freedom of speech advocates, but polls show that the majority of Australians support this decision.
