The Republic of Armenia has officially assumed the chairmanship of the General Affairs Committee of the 30th Conference of the States Parties to the Organization for the Prohibition of Chemical Weapons. This was reported by the Embassy of the Republic of Armenia in the Netherlands.
On the occasion of assuming the chairmanship, the Permanent Representative of the Republic of Armenia to the Organization for the Prohibition of Chemical Weapons, Ambassador Viktor Biyagov, noted: "It is a great honor for Armenia to assume this responsible position. Our chairmanship will reflect Armenia's unconditional dedication to the Chemical Weapons Convention's primary objectives. Armenia is ready to contribute its experience in bridging differences and finding constructive solutions."
The General Affairs Committee is the most crucial body of the Conference of the States Parties to the OPCW, consisting of all States Parties to the OPCW, where the main substantive issues are discussed, for which agreement among States Parties was not possible due to their sensitivity. Thus, the primary function of the Committee is to consider the proposals submitted by all States Parties to the OPCW on the issues addressed to it and to conduct negotiations with a view to reaching consensus.
As chair, Armenia is responsible for coordinating these discussions and negotiations, working with all parties involved. The chair plays a crucial role in holding informal consultations and guiding the negotiations.
