Barcelona's iconic Sagrada Familia has become the world's tallest church after the installation of a new section of its central tower. The work of the brilliant architect Antoni Gaudí now stands at 162.91 meters, surpassing the 161.53-meter Ulm Cathedral tower in Germany. The numbers speak for themselves: Sagrada Familia is 1.38 meters taller than the previous record holder.
And that's not all. Work is ongoing, and the central tower of Jesus Christ, which gradually rises from the top of the church, will soon reach its final height of 172 meters. The cathedral has become one of the world's most popular tourist attractions, with an estimated 4.9 million people visiting last year alone. The money they pay to see is helping to finance the construction.
Despite the record height, there is still considerable work to be done. The cathedral's intricate facades and interior decoration will continue to be built over the coming years, with full completion expected in approximately a decade. Next year marks the 100th anniversary of Gaudí's death, and the temple's management is planning numerous events to celebrate his brilliant legacy, which continues to rise, both literally and figuratively.
