Climate change threatens ancient cities of Mesopotamia

Iraqi officials are warning that monuments from the cradle of human civilization are in danger. Ancient cities dating back thousands of years could disappear as climate change erodes southern Iraq.

Dry, hot weather has increased soil salinity, damaging monuments in the ruins of ancient cities such as Ur, Babylon, and others. The dunes are eroding the nearly 4,000-year-old Step Pyramid, dedicated to the moon god Nanna, in the northern part of Ur.
