The world is facing an “emerging crisis” of rising deaths among adolescents and young adults, a global study on the causes of death and disability says. The causes range from drug and alcohol use and suicide to infectious diseases and injuries.
The researchers warn that their data should serve as a “wake-up call.” The study also found that chronic diseases such as heart disease and diabetes now account for two-thirds of all illnesses, while mental health problems are rising sharply.
While the rise in mental health disorders is widely studied, there is still much debate about the causes, whether it is the impact of social media or broader societal trends in parenting. We know that COVID has made things worse. There is a great deal of controversy around this topic, both in psychiatric epidemiology and in public discourse, making it difficult to find solutions.
