Armenia celebrates Independence Day

Today, September 21, the Republic of Armenia celebrates Independence Day.

On September 21, 1991, based on the provisions of the Declaration of Independence of Armenia, the parliament decided to hold a referendum on the territory of the republic to secede from the USSR and become independent.

The overwhelming majority of the population of the republic, 94.39 percent of those eligible to vote, or 2 million 43 thousand people, said “Yes” to independence. Based on the results of the referendum, on September 23, 1991, the Supreme Council of the republic declared Armenia an independent state.

In 1991, 48 states recognized the independence of the Republic of Armenia. On March 2, 1992, our country became a full member of the UN.
