The Ministry of Defense of the Republic of Armenia has submitted for public discussion a draft amendment to the Law "On Military Service and the Status of a Serviceman", which proposes to set the mandatory military service period at 18 months.
According to the draft, the amendment will be applied starting from the summer conscription of 2026.
The justification states that the RA Government's 2021-2026 program provides for a reduction in the mandatory military service period due to an increase in the volume of contract service. The Ministry of Defense considered it appropriate to reduce the current compulsory 24-month military service period for ordinary personnel by 6 months from the summer conscription of 2026, setting a period of 18 months.
