Areni will become an attractive destination for eco and gastro tourism lovers

On July 24, the Minister of Economy of the Republic of Armenia, Gevorg Papoyan, paid a working visit to the Areni community in the Vayots Dzor region. He was accompanied by the Chairperson of the Tourism Committee of the Ministry of Economy of the Republic of Armenia, Lusine Gevorgyan; the Deputy Governor of Vayots Dzor region, Arsen Khachatryan; and the Head of the Areni community, Husik Sahakyan.

The Minister met with the members of the community council and heads of administrative districts. The work carried out to form the Areni wine tourism cluster and the subsequent steps for community development were discussed. The Areni wine tourism cluster is one of seven clusters to be created with investments from the Government of the Republic of Armenia. The program aims to promote the development of wine, resort, adventure, cultural, educational, and ecotourism, contributing to the increase in economic activity in the regions.

Minister Papoyan noted that Areni is one of the main tourist destinations, which is distinguished by its strategic geographical location, rich cultural heritage, and unique natural landscape.

“Areni hosts more than 500,000 visitors annually. The discovery of a 6,000-year-old wine cellar has made it a symbol of wine tourism, further strengthening international interest in our country. An additional $12 million is planned to be allocated for the development of the cluster, which will significantly deepen the potential of the community, making Areni a more attractive destination for lovers of eco and gastro tourism,” the Minister emphasized.

The total budget for the program exceeds 120 million euros. The Minister answered the questions of those present, addressed the problems and suggestions they raised, emphasizing that the participation and initiative of local authorities and community residents are essential in the development of communities.
