It is planned to establish a grafted model grape collection garden for the first time in Armenia

A new scientific research program for the preservation and sustainable use of local grape varieties has been launched in Armenia. The project envisages the establishment of a grafted model grape collection garden for the first time in Armenia, where 120–150 endangered local varieties will be preserved and studied.

The program is implemented with state funding from the Higher Education and Science Committee of the Ministry of Education, Science and Culture of Armenia. In 2024, it was included in the framework of two target programs:
"Research projects in promising" directions"—54 million drams, "Program for strengthening scientific departments"—176" million drams.

The program is headed by Kristine Margaryan, head of the scientific group of plant genomics at the Institute of Molecular Biology of the National Academy of Sciences, candidate of biological sciences.

"The main goal of the research is to study the genomic compatibility of local varieties and American rootstocks, which is an urgent need due to the presence of the phylloxera pest that damages grape roots in Armenia," Kristine Margaryan noted in a conversation with us.
