"This is one of the prerequisites for visa liberalization with the EU." Deputy Minister (VIDEO)

Private companies can participate in the tender to issue biometric passports and identification cards. At the government meeting, Deputy Minister of Internal Affairs Arpine Sargsyan informed that applicants can apply until January 10, and the government will summarize the evaluation process in 80 days.

"By the end of March 2025, we will have a confirmed winning company according to the submitted proposals, and we will give a period to implement the infrastructure and start production," he said.

According to Sargsyan, a biometric passport implies a high identification standard for a person and a relationship with other states. "Very often, both the people in this hall and other citizens face such problems at the airports that do not allow them to pass the border checkpoints quickly, and this new system, as a result of the collection and matching of biometric data, will allow to reduce the queues at the airports," he said.

According to Sargsyan, introducing that system is one of the prerequisites for visa liberalization with the EU. "Following this path, we will be able to guarantee high security of biometric data, clear detection of forgeries, if any, and ensure smooth passage through border crossing points," he said.
