In New York, within the framework of the High-Level Political Forum dedicated to Sustainable Development at the UN Headquarters, RA NA Deputy Speaker Hakob Arshakyan met with the General Secretary of the Inter-Parliamentary Union, Martin Chungong.
The Deputy Speaker of the National Assembly presented the regional developments and existing challenges and referred to the issues related to returning prisoners and other detained persons in Azerbaijan.
"The Republic of Armenia believes that a strong democratic state, whose core is human rights and the rule of law, is a major prerequisite for ensuring the state's and society's resistance against many challenges and crises," said Hakob Arshakyan.
Highly appreciating the efforts of international partners in promoting the dialogue between Armenia and Azerbaijan, the Deputy Speaker of the National Assembly also valued the activity of Martin Chungong in that regard.
The latter shared the excellent impressions of his recent visit to Armenia and also referred to the 10th conference of young deputies of the Inter-Parliamentary Union to be held in Armenia in September.
"The parliament of Armenia is the youngest in the world, and I am happy that the 10th conference of young deputies of the Inter-Parliamentary Union will be held in Armenia," he noted.
The General Secretary of the Inter-Parliamentary Union expressed support for the peace process between Armenia and Azerbaijan and added that the Inter-Parliamentary Union will make efforts to develop the process.
At the end of the meeting, Martin Chungong noted that the cooperation between the RA National Assembly and the Inter-Parliamentary Union is encouraging; Armenian MPs are actively involved in the work of various union bodies.
