The World Meteorological Organization has officially recognized Europe's new temperature record

The World Meteorological Organization (WMO) has recognized the temperature of 48.8°C recorded by an automatic weather station in Syracuse on the island of Sicily on August 11, 2021, as a new record for continental Europe.

WMO, a specialized organization of the United Nations, reminded in a message in Geneva that the previous record of 48.0°C was recorded on July 10, 1977, in Athens and Elefsis, Greece.

It was based on official government sources and included in the WMO Global Data Archive on Weather and Climate Extremes 2007. The report noted that the WMO had yet to independently verify the record, unlike the recent record temperature in Italy.

In most cases, record confirmation by the WMO requires lengthy procedures that provide critical confidence that world records are recorded as a result of correctly performed measurements.
