The government is introducing a new program, "Defender of The Motherland" As RA Minister of Defense Suren Papikyan informed, as a result of legislative changes, a new system of transition from compulsory military service to contract service is being introduced for rank-and-file officers. "The program envisages the possibility of enlisting in military service under contract after the first six months of compulsory military service for rank-and-file and officers, by the established procedure of the government, setting the term of service at five years, as well as for those who are discharged from service early due to the expiration of the contract or being declared unfit due to health conditions. The right to set an honorarium. It is planned to set the honorarium amount at 5 million drams, managed freely."

Suren Papikyan mentioned that the contract's service members would also be subject to certification.

Papikyan mentioned that in case of refusal of contractual military service, that period would not be counted in the service member's mandatory service period. The service member will be obliged to continue the unserved part of the military service.

This project was recognized as urgent and will be presented to the National Assembly.

RA Prime Minister Nikol Pashinyan added that this is one of the steps to transition to a professional army. "At this stage, those conscripts who want to transition to professional service will be provided with at least a five-year opportunity by this law."
