On September 26, within the framework of the DART mission, the equipment sent by NASA hit the asteroid Dimorphos (150-170 meters in diameter) to change its orbit.
It turns out that the plan was successful, and Dimorphos changed the orbit around Didymos (that's the name of the other asteroid around which Dimorphos revolves). According to the information, instead of 11 hours and 55 minutes, it now rotates into 11 hours and 23 minutes. Change: 32 minutes.
For the first time, the method of "deflecting" asteroids threatening the planet Earth with an impact was tested, which can later be used in case of material danger. This is the first time in history that homo sapiens managed to change the orbit of a celestial body. This can become a significant precedent in the field of cosmology.
