British writer Salman Rushdie was attacked with a knife before his speech

A 24-year-old resident of New Jersey, Hadi Matar, attacked the Indian-born British writer Salman Rushdie with a knife before his speech in New York and stabbed him 10-15 times.

The British writer has been living in fear of death for 30 years. In 1989, Iran's Supreme Leader Ayatollah Khomeini issued a fatwa (religious ban) against him. The reason was his novel "Satanic Verses", which caused the anger of many Muslims, who saw the book as an insult to the Prophet Muhammad.

Rushdie is currently on a ventilator. He cannot speak, his liver is damaged and he will most likely lose his eye.
