Astronauts on long-duration missions to Mars and the Moon will need food systems that are entirely independent of Earth.
To address this challenge, NASA is launching a new global competition, the Deep Space Food Challenge: Mars to Table.
Contestants are required to develop complete diets for a crew on Mars, along with food system concepts that incorporate innovative technologies to fully meet the crew’s nutritional needs.
The challenge will officially end in September 2026, with a total prize pool of $750,000.
