Archaeologists have unearthed a Neolithic stone axe head dating back nearly 5,000 years, along with the remains of Roman-era buildings near Lincoln, England.
Archaeologists had expected to find a Roman settlement, but the real surprise was a much older layer dating back to around 3,000 BC. The axe head is polished and sharp, and experts argue it was not intended for practical use; it was a high-status, valuable object, perhaps for exchange or ritual purposes.
The site also found Roman walls, a column fragment, thousands of pottery shards, and personal items such as brooches, bracelets, and hairpins. This suggests that prosperous Roman homes existed outside the city of Lincoln, much as modern wealthy suburbs do.
