The concept of winter is changing in the Arctic

The Arctic experienced its warmest temperature in 125 years from October 2024 to September 2025, according to NOAA. The past 10 years have been the warmest in Arctic history.

The warming is occurring at up to four times the average rate, causing the ice to melt. The oldest and thickest ice has shrunk by more than 95 percent since the 1980s.

The Arctic has also seen record precipitation this year, including rain, even in winter. Scientists say the definition of winter in the Arctic is changing.

Melting ice is accelerating ocean warming, and the melting of the Greenland ice sheet is a threat to the entire world.
