With his visit to Turkey and Lebanon, Pope Leo XIV became the first American pope to make a foreign visit.
The visit accomplished what Pope Francis had intended before his health deteriorated, and it gave Leo XIV a powerful platform to speak about peace in the Middle East. In a notable change, he abandoned the Vatican’s traditional Italian and spoke exclusively in English in Turkey and in Lebanon, where he also spoke French.
