Unexpected visitors have broken the cold, windy silence of Kolyuchin Island. On this small island, located about 11 kilometers off the northern coast of the Chukchi Peninsula in Russia’s far east, polar bears have taken up residence on the grounds of an abandoned polar research station.
The photo series was taken in September by Russian photographer Vadim Makhorov, who used a drone to capture the bears’ movements as they sailed through the Chukchi Sea. The photos show polar bears roaming freely through the abandoned buildings, some looking out of windows and others resting on the roofs.
Kolyuchin Island has served as a polar scientific observatory for many years, but now all the buildings are completely abandoned. The area now serves as a refuge for wildlife, particularly polar bears, which are forced to seek new places for food and rest due to climate change and shrinking glaciers.
