2000-year-old sunken relics in the waters of Alexandria (PHOTOS)

Archaeologists and divers have jointly recovered 2,000-year-old sunken artifacts from the Mediterranean Sea, including statues, Roman coins, and other historical relics. The operation was carried out off the coast of Alexandria.

Among the finds were a headless statue, a sphinx, and a statue of an unknown priest.

The statues are being lifted by a crane from the Mediterranean Sea to the shores of Alexandria’s Abu-Kir Bay. Authorities say the site in the bay could be the continuation of the ancient city of Canopus, a prominent center of the Ptolemaic dynasty and the Roman Empire.
