Glaciers are disappearing in the Alps (PHOTOS)

Swiss scientists continue to monitor glacier changes in the Alps closely. Glacier melting has increased dramatically in recent years, which has become a significant concern for scientists. The state of the Rhone Glacier, which provides water flow to the Rhone River, a vital water source for Switzerland and France, is particularly alarming.

Switzerland is considered the glacial center of continental Europe, with about 1,400 glaciers. However, the country has lost up to 1,000 small glaciers in the past two decades; now, even large ice masses are at risk.

In addition to the consequences for natural ecosystems, glacier melting has a direct impact on Europe’s drinking water supplies, agriculture, and hydropower. In Switzerland, hydroelectric power plants are the primary energy source, and glacier meltwater plays a significant role in that system.
