Until now, no one seriously thought that the bomb shelters built in the 1950s, now preserved as "historical interest" by the ArcelorMittal Warszawa factory, could one day be used as shelters again. But as Russia strikes Ukraine, shelling the area around a nuclear plant and making repeated threats to use nuclear weapons, the Polish government has ordered an inventory of the country's 62 atomic shelters.
The war has raised fears across Europe, particularly in countries such as Poland and Romania, which border Ukraine and would be highly vulnerable in the event of a nuclear disaster.
