Armenia attaches importance to developing relations with South American countries. The mutual visits of high-ranking officials in recent years clearly evidence this. Tatevik Gasparyan, head of the NA Armenia-Guatemala friendship group, noted welcoming Guatemala's Ambassador Extraordinary and Plenipotentiary Gustavo Adolfo López Calderón (residence: Moscow) to our country. Knyaz Hasanov, a member of the Armenia-Guatemala friendship group, participated in the meeting.
Tatevik Gasparyan spoke about the need to develop multi-sectoral cooperation between the two countries and activate inter-parliamentary ties, emphasizing the role of friendly groups. The deputy expressed hope that after the parliamentary elections held in Guatemala, a friendly group with Armenia will be formed in the near future.
The leader of the friendly group referred to the current situation in the region and discussed normalizing relations with Azerbaijan and Turkey. Presenting the "Crossroads of Peace" project authored by the RA government to the ambassador, Tatevik Gasparyan noted that its implementation will contribute to establishing long-term peace and stability in the region.
According to Knyaz Hasanov, in contrast to the RA authorities' readiness to sign a peace treaty, Azerbaijan is delaying its signing for a number of reasons. The deputy highlighted Guatemala's role as a member of the United Nations.
Tatevik Gasparyan also spoke about the RA government's efforts to meet the socio-economic needs of our compatriots forcibly displaced from Nagorno-Karabakh and also expressed concern about the Armenian prisoners held in Azerbaijan. The head of the friendly group emphasized the support of international partners in overcoming the challenges raised.
Gustavo Adolfo López Calderon, thanking for the reception, also emphasized the activation of parliamentary interaction. According to the ambassador, the government of Guatemala is aware of and welcomes Armenia's efforts to establish peace in the South Caucasus.
