Russian President Vladimir Putin has announced that American proposals aimed at establishing peace in Ukraine are under discussion in Alaska and could, in practice, serve as a basis for a settlement.
“Nothing is surprising in Russia’s position here, since hints were already visible in several other statements,” political commentator Hakob Badalyan said in an interview with Radar Armenia, emphasizing that the plan with the US was practically formed in the culmination of the Trump-Putin meeting in Alaska. It is logical that Russia positively views this content as a basis for negotiations.
As is well known, Turkish President Erdogan has stated that Ankara is ready to make efforts to ensure a “lasting and just peace,” which, according to the political scientist, was a negotiating platform from the very beginning of the war.
“In the very first period of the war, Turkey was a platform where the famous Istanbul negotiating content was being developed. According to the Ukrainian side, that agreement was not concluded precisely because of the intervention of Boris Johnson, who had stated that it was necessary not to negotiate, but to fight,” the political scientist emphasized.
According to Badalyan, Ankara is now trying to re-engage in the process. Erdogan’s policy is characterized by entering in all directions and assuming a role where it sees an opportunity. This is a normal behavior for any ambitious state that wants to increase its geopolitical weight,” he said, and emphasized that from this point of view, it was expected that Erdogan would also try to enter new processes and make the most of it.
