On November 16, special elections for the council of elders were held in the enlarged community of Vagharshapat, resulting in the "Civil Contract" party, led by Argishti Mekhakyan, winning with an overwhelming majority of votes.
"The fact that no violations were recorded allows us to say that some participants say that an administrative resource was used; in any case, everyone is at peace with the results," political scientist Gagik Kamalyan said in an interview with Radar Armenia.
According to him, positive trends are observed, especially in the sense that local and national elections are not falsified during the term of Prime Minister Nikol Pashinyan.
Some oppositionists note that the elections may have a possible impact on the church, but, according to the political scientist, they cannot have a significant effect. "I don't think so, but the fact that it was in Vagharshapat, where the Catholicos' residence is also located, and that there was a political victory in that environment, speaks volumes," he noted, emphasizing that the results of local elections, in general, reflect the natural course of political processes and do not affect public relations.
